I finally understand what alignment means
The word everyone uses and no one explains
I’ve heard people use the term “alignment” more times than I can count, especially when it comes to business.
And even though it sounds like such a nice word — alignment — I’d always think to myself, okay…what does that actually mean though?
How does being “in alignment” make me better in business? Make me more money? Make my life better?
I wouldn’t say I thought it was woo-woo, it just never quite clicked for me.
But a couple of weeks ago, I interviewed a Self Mastery & Alignment Mentor — and the way she described alignment finally had me saying, “Ooooooh. I see now.”
Mimi Bland has a PhD in Spiritual Psychology and 25+ years experience in mindset training.
She’s worked with billionaire clients and spoken on stages across the world.
So, I figured…who better to talk about this with?
I asked Mimi on our interview, “How would you explain to a sixth grader what alignment feels like?”
Without hesitation, she said,
“Surrender.
It’s literally letting go.
It’s feeling the silence.”
And even though she had a lot more to say about this (interview linked below), this one idea has replayed in my head probably 12 times over the last week.
I keep thinking about the times in my life when I’ve felt the least silent.
When I was 18 years old, sitting at home while my boyfriend was at a party, and my mind was spiralling with thoughts of who he might be cheating on me with now.
When I was 21, out for the evening with my girlfriends, and my thoughts raced with the calories I’d consumed and how I would sneak away to the bathroom “get rid of” the sushi and drinks without anyone noticing.
When I was 26, sitting at my desk answering emails that I could barely focus on because my thoughts were so loud with “This isn’t where I belong” pleadings.
That’s why I keep thinking about what Mimi said.
This is the first time someone’s ever explained alignment in a way that feels…well, aligned
The times in my life where I’ve felt the most loud inside, the most white-knuckle-gripping need for control, are the times when I’ve been the most out of alignment.
I see now that those were the phases when my decisions, actions, and lifestyle didn’t match my authentic self and core values.
Being in a relationship with someone who made me feel scared and unwanted was out of alignment.
Forcing myself to purge because I thought I needed to in order to be desirable was out of alignment.
Showing up to a 9-5 job every day even though I knew it wasn’t the lifestyle I wanted was out of alignment.
Looking back now, it seems so obvious.
I spent the better part of a decade trying to just push through the noise.
Damn—that’s a lot of time to spend on being somewhere and not really being there.
When I compare that to the decisions that have felt so calm, so…quiet, this all finally makes sense.
When my husband asked me to marry him, I had no racing anxious thoughts.
When I lost that 9-5 job after the pandemic, and I was suddenly free, my mind went weirdly silent.
And just last year, when we decided to turn my love of interviewing into an offer, I felt that stillness.
It’s not that everything suddenly feels easy. Definitely not.
But it’s this odd sense of knowing.
Knowing that even though we still have much to figure out and far to go, I have the sense I’ve finally found the path, I’m on it, and the distance left feels exciting because it feels right.
What I hope you’ll take from this
You probably already know what being out of alignment feels like.
So, the next time you’re spiralling over something—questioning why this feels wrong or whether you’re making the right call—don’t try to silence those thoughts.
Don’t shove them down and keep doing the thing anyway.
Listen.
I used to think the goal was to silence the noise. Now I think the noise is the answer.
It was always the loudest when I was drifting from who I actually want to be.
