The number one thing that’s changed my life
And this $1M YouTuber agrees
Imagine being able to say, “I’ve made enough money that I could completely stop working, and my family’s bills would be taken care of for the next 20 years.”
For most of us, that sounds like a fantasy. But for Finn McKenty, that’s reality.
But that’s not why I wanted to interview Finn for you guys.
(I mean, it’s part of it).
I wanted to interview him because he’s one of the most honest business owners I’ve ever met. He holds nothing back. Some people might even say he’s too blunt.
But when half the content on the internet today is full of smoke and mirrors, we need more conversations like this.
All of that is to say, the advice I’m about to share with you came from Finn — but it’s also something I’ve found to be uncomfortably true in my life.
“The number one thing you can do to create positive change in your life is to talk to other people. That’s it.”
Now before you think this sounds like overly-simplified, generic advice — let me paint you a picture.
My entire writing career began with one awkward message.
I’d written a blog post about my experience with bulimia, then emailed my local newspaper asking if they’d share it.
They said yes. That one email turned into a freelance journalism job. And that lit the spark on the match of my journey as a writer.
It started with me having a conversation that made me nervous.
Then, I took the same approach with college.
I paid for about 60% of my college education by asking for scholarships. I’d search and apply for any scholarship I could fit the criteria for.
Female writer scholarships
Women in tech business grants
Mental health advocate scholarships
If I thought I had a 2% chance, I applied. I shot my shot.
I graduated college with zero debt because of it. Because I was willing to reach out and ask for what I wanted.
Fast forward to today.
My husband and I run a full-time online business that allows me to write content like this.
Every single one of these stories about the inspirational people I interview starts with a conversation.
“Here’s why your story feels important to me.
Here’s what I’d like to interview you about.
Here’s what I can give to you in return.”
That’s it.
But this isn’t just a “me” thing. It’s exactly how Finn’s career started too.
Back when he was working a low-wage printing job, he met Chase Jarvis — the guy who would later found Creative Live.
Finn asked Chase for a job on the spot. Chase said no.
So Finn called him again a few weeks later and said, “Good news — I just got laid off. So I can work for free.”
Chase said yes. And that one bold conversation turned into a 20-year partnership that changed Finn’s entire career.
All because he was willing to ask.
I’m not sharing Finn’s advice because I think it sounds smart. I’m sharing it because he’s absolutely right.
Putting yourself out there and talking to people will absolutely change your life.
For you…
I want you to think about why you’re here reading this right now.
There’s something you want — a new path, a different life, some sort of external validation about why you should go for it.
Now, I want you to ask yourself, “What’s one conversation I could have that would light the spark of that match?”
Take this as your sign. Send the message. Ask the stupid question. Reach out to the person who inspires you.
You have no idea which, “Hey, I know this sounds crazy but…” could change your life.
And speaking of learning how to reach out and have better conversations, I just released my first official training: How I Landed My First Clients Without Feeling Salesy.
This is a step-by-step training on how I:
Turn conversations into paying clients
Maintain a 50%+ close rate on sales calls
Coach new agency owners on prospecting (without feeling salesy)
It’s out, and you get to decide what it feels worth to you.

Personal update
Last week, we spoke with a general contractor who we may hire to be our building consultant for both our home and our greenhouse business project.
We learned that because we’re planning to build our home out-of-pocket (no mortgage), we’ll likely need to build it in phases.
Do you know anyone who built a home without using a bank? Seems pretty unrealistic, right?
If you’re new here, my husband and I are building a tropical greenhouse business in the middle of cold-ass Canada—an oasis where we can enjoy nature, even in -40°.
If you’re into that, and want to be part of our community, come along with us!
Know a local business owner who needs more customers?
That’s my day job — reply here and tell me about them!
Are you an Inspired Idiot?
If you’re committed to creating your “unrealistic” life…
and want real talk from people actually doing it…
welcome home!
Every “successful” person is just an inspired idiot who didn’t quit.
Joining our annual membership will get you:
1:1 coaching session with me on what’s stopping you
behind-the-scenes content of building our greenhouse business

This is great advice re: talking to people. And you don't even have to consider it "networking" or something you "have" to do.
I reached out to 2 people I used to work with over the last month, just for a friendly hangout, and both of them offered me jobs over the course of the conversation.
I think part of it is just keeping up with people and letting them know that, whether you still work together or not, you remember them and care.
I’m new here, and I think your content kicks ass. Seriously enjoy every word! And as a sidebar, my husband and I are small business owners who built our home bank-free—and we’re currently doing the same for an addition. It’s possible. It’s challenging. It’s worth it.
